متن کاملDoes the mid-Atlantic United States sea-level acceleration hot spot reflect ocean dynamic variability?
To test a hypothesized faster-than-global sea-level acceleration along the mid-Atlantic United States, I construct a Gaussian process model that decomposes tide gauge data into short-term variability and longer-term trends, and into globally-coherent, regionally-coherent and local components. While tide gauge records indicate a faster-than-global increase in the rate of mid-Atlantic U.S. sea-le...
متن کاملA geological perspective on sea-level rise and its impacts along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast
We evaluate paleo-, historical, and future sea-level rise along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast. The rate of relative sea-level rise in New Jersey decreased from 3.5± 1.0mm/yr at 7.5–6.5 ka, to 2.2± 0.8mm/yr at 5.5–4.5 ka to a minimum of 0.9± 0.4mm/yr at 3.3–2.3 ka. Relative sea level rose at a rate of 1.6± 0.1mm/yr from 2.2 to 1.2 ka (750 Common Era [CE]) and 1.4± 0.1mm/yr from 800 to 1800 CE. Geo...
متن کاملModel projections of rapid sea-level rise on the northeast coast of the United States
Human-induced climate change could cause global sea-level rise. Through the dynamic adjustment of the sea surface in response to a possible slowdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation1,2, a warming climate could also affect regional sea levels, especially in the North Atlantic region3, leading to high vulnerability for low-lying Florida and western Europe4–6. Here we analyse cli...
متن کاملThe sea-level budget along the Northwest Atlantic coast: GIA, mass changes, and large-scale ocean dynamics
Sea-level rise and decadal variability along the northwestern coast of the North Atlantic Ocean are studied in a self-consistent framework that takes into account the effects of solid-earth deformation and geoid changes due to large-scale mass redistribution processes. Observations of sea and land level changes from tide gauges and GPS are compared to the cumulative effect of GIA, present-day m...
